The U.S. Department of Education’s International Education Programs Service (IEPS) conducted a two-day workshop on key issues related to language teaching, acquisition, and assessment. In addition to exploring these issues, the goal of the workshop was to facilitate and improve cooperation among IEPS programs, including: the National Resource Centers (NRC), Language Resource Centers (LRC), and the Group Projects Abroad (GPA) Advanced Intensive Language programs; and to provide a forum for grantee input and feedback on IEPS language issues. The workshop participants include both current IEPS grantees and outside experts.
The workshop included 10 panels. Each panel included a chair and several other speakers. General workshop participants, primarily experts in related fields, took part in the discussions. Each speaker gave a short presentation, followed by discussion among the panel participants and general participants. The panelists summarized the presentations and discussions and suggested next steps, targets, and recommendations. These panel summaries will be developed into chapters in a publication resulting from the workshop, and will serve as a basis for IEPS language issues policies.
The plenary address was given by Ray Clifford.
