Searching in IRIS - Frequently Asked Questions
If you have questions about entering or submitting a grantee report to IEPS, use this FAQ.
What is IEPS?
The International Education Programs Service (IEPS), part of the U.S. Department of Education, administers 14 international education programs. These programs are complementary in nature and benefit a variety of audiences through training programs, research, start-up or enhancement projects, and fellowships.

How can I find information on applying for a grant from IEPS?
Please go to the IEPS homepage at http://www.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ope/iegps/index.html for more information.

How many IEPS grants are presently included in the database?
Currently there are over 5525 published grants in the database. Search results only include data deemed ready for publication. The Browse Programs screen provides information on what is available for each program.

Do I need a username and password?
You do not need a username and password to view the grants in the grant database. You do need one to enter your performance report.

How far back can I search?
The database contains published information on grants awarded by IEPS back to 1959 and information on fellowships awarded by IEPS back to 1967.

Is there a particular Web browser that is better to use with the online database?
Yes, the database web site performs best under Internet Explorer and Netscape 4.7 and above. The grant database website does not use any platform-specific technologies other than conformance with the HTML 4.0.1 specification. If you have difficulty viewing this site, please make sure your browser is not outdated (more than a few years old) and that it conforms to this standard.

How can I suggest improvements in the content or accessibility of this database?
We are always looking for suggestions and feedback. Please visit our contact us screen to send your suggestion, comment, or question.

What if I have difficulty using the screens?
Most common technical questions can be answered using the online help information below. For additional questions please contact technical support staff through the contact us screen.

How can I find more information on a particular grant?
Each database entry displays a set of contacts for the grant, including the Project Director. For grants that have ended, the Project Director and/or other contacts may no longer be available at the address listed. In this event, you may attempt to contact the department or institution that was awarded the grant, and inquire as to where you may find more information.

Help
Click the "Search Tab" on the menu bar to search information about IEPS grants and fellows. The instructions below explain each of the tabs available from the search page.

Basic Search
The "Basic Search" option is used to perform simple searches of the grant data. If you are just browsing through the grants, use the "Basic Search" or "Browse" options.

To use the "Basic Search" option and locate the grants that match particular words or phrases, enter those "keywords" and press the "Search" button. All of the grants that match your query will be displayed on the results page. If you receive too many matches, try using more specific search terms. If you do not receive any matches, try using fewer search terms.

Advanced Search
The "Advanced Search" option allows you to perform customized searches of the grant data. Use the "Advanced Search" option when you want to see grants that match specific search criteria.

To use the "Advanced Search" option, fill in your search criteria in one or more of the data fields and press the "Search" button. All of the grants that match your query will be displayed on the results page. If you receive too many matches, try using more specific search terms. If you do not receive any matches, try using fewer search terms. To view grants that match particular words or phrases, enter those "keywords" and press the "Search" button.

Fellow Search
The "Fellow Search" option allows you to search fellows by name, program, institution, language and discipline. The IEPS grant database contains information on FLAS fellows back to 1958, on DDRA fellows back to 1964, on FRA fellows back to 2003, on Group Projects participants back to 2004, and on Seminars Abroad participants back to 2001.

Queries

Browse Programs
The "Browse Programs" tab allows you to view the grants by program, subject area, language, country, or discipline. Select one of these options from the drop down list. On the results page, click a link to view all of the grants that fall under that category. For example, if you select "Language" from the drop down list, all languages will display. You can then select a language to view grants that include the language.
