FLAS Fellowships are intended to “stimulate the attainment of foreign language acquisition and fluency.” Unfortunately, many intensive language programs are not likely to serve as an effective stepping stone toward this goal - even those that have become standbys. This panel will critically examine the current state of intensive programs and what we know about effective intensive language learning, including: time on task (not merely seat time!), curriculum, the role of assessment, and program oversight.
